Laughter echoed through the room as students in my Interpersonal Communication class worked in groups, crafting captions for random memes. Each team presented their creations, sparking lively debates over which meme deserved the top vote. But the fun was just the beginning. After the game, we dove into a discussion about semantic, pragmatic, and sociolinguistic meanings, connecting textbook concepts to the humor behind their favorite memes.

This activity wasn’t just entertaining—it was purposeful. By blending a familiar online medium with clear learning goals, I helped students think critically and engage deeply with the material. This approach reflects TPACK (Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge), a framework that emphasizes aligning teaching methods, technology, and learning objectives to create impactful educational experiences.

So, here’s how I applied TPACK in this activity:

  1. Pedagogical Beliefs: My teaching philosophy centers on inspiring students to be a self-motivated, life long learners. Thus, I use technology as a tool to inspire meaningful interaction and active learning.

  2. Technological Knowledge: Among countless tools available, I chose Memeit.com in my above example because it aligns with my goal of fostering peer interaction while adding an element of enjoyment to the learning process.

  3. Learning Goals: Technology supports, not overshadows, the learning objectives. In the above example, the goal was for students to understand and apply concepts like semantic, pragmatic, and sociolinguistic meanings. Thus, I chose Memeit.com because it allows people to create various meanings of memes.

By intentionally aligning technology with my teaching philosophy and learning goals, I transformed a simple activity into a memorable learning experience. It’s a reminder that with the right approach, even memes can become powerful educational tools.
